There is now a way to measure how much time you are spending on technology. The “time spent online” measurement was designed by Michael Useem, the founder and president of Deloitte Consulting LLP, in his article “Beyond BlackBerry: Measuring Technology Usage In The Workplace.”
The time-tracking software available today is sophisticated enough that it can be used not only to measure technology use, but also other activities such as work productivity or meeting attendance. Many of these programs offer customization options that let managers track the hours employees spend working on specific projects or tasks, as well as the hours they spend engaged in non-work activities.
One program, RescueTime, allows employees to set goals for how much time they would like to spend working each day, reading emails and articles, surfing the web and checking social media sites. Once an employee has signed up for RescueTime and entered their email address and password, the software will send them an email alert when they have reached their goal for that day. Employees can also see a Weekly report that summarizes their total hours worked each week and detailed reports for individual days or weeks.
